Whether you are celebrating atop a highrise rooftop or cozied up on the couch with a glass of bubbly and your remote control, when the clock strikes midnight in 2014 what will be your New Year’s resolution? Sure, there are the usual standbys: get fit, get organized, save money. May I propose a fashion resolution?

Step out of the solid color box. Animal prints, plaids, stripes and polka dots are all fun and easy to wear patterns. If done well, patterns can sometimes be mixed and matched but beware, there is a fine line between looking amazing in a plaid and polka dot ensemble and looking like you were dressed in the dark by a 5-year-old. One of my favorite ways to incorporate patterns with fun pops of color is with shoes. A hot pair of leopard print shoes can take an outfit from “OK” to “Oh my!”Try a hat. Now that the fashion world has all of us using scarves regularly, step into the fun world of hats. With so many styles to choose from you are sure to find one that suits you. Winter fashions show some throwbacks to the ’20s with cloche style hats.

Break the blazer mold. Stores are full of fantastic blazers in bold colors, prints and even styled with studs. And blazers aren’t just for suits, ladies. A great blazer can add a pop of color to a simple jeans and white T outfit. Pair it was some great flats for the day or pumps for a little happy hour fun.  Let someone give you a makeover. Let them be as bold and different as they want to be. While you may not decide to keep all the fun elements, you may be surprised at what you will change, whether it’s straightening your hair (or curling it) more often or having fun with colored eyeliners and bold lip colors.

Play dress up more. Dressing rooms in mall stores are your window to all things fashionably fun. Trying on clothes is free so take something in the dressing room you never thought you would buy but have always been curious about. My favorite store to try on unique styles is Anthropologie. They have great dressing rooms with large mirrors and their fashions are second to none. Shopping with friends and letting them pick things for you to try on can make for one great and often times hilarious girls day.

Remember, New Year’s resolutions should be fun, achievable and they should inspire a change in you. Cheers to 2014, lovelies. See you at the mall!Tina Medina is marketing manager at Otay Ranch Town Center.
