The high school cross country season has stepped off with a bang for the east Chula Vista’s high school teams, in particular.
Eastlake captured the Division 1 girls frosh/soph division and Mater Dei Catholic won the Division 3 boys frosh/soph division at the season-opening Vaquero Stampede while Eastlake also finished second in the Division 1 girls junior/senior race and third in both the Division 1 frosh/soph and junior senior boys races.
At the 18th annual Mustang/East Hills Realty Invitational, Otay Ranch was the top finishing Mesa League team in both the boys and girls varsity large school divisions.
Among individuals, Eastlake senior Oliver Abundez was the top finishing Metro Conference runner at both the Vaquero and Mustang invitationals while Otay Ranch junior Darla Osuna, a returning state meet qualifier, paced Mesa League female runners at the 1,379-strong Mustang meet.
Which team will come out on top in the league standings? Dual meet competition will be contested throughout October. The league finals are scheduled Nov. 15.
