The 2016 Mariachi Festival celebrates Mexican culture by bringing together 10 mariachi bands to compete for a $1,000 cash prize. The band competition is the culmination of day long fiesta featuring traditional ballet folkloric dancing, art displays and food. The March 13 event is in its fourth year and is held from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Pepper Park in National City. Prior to the festival, from March 11-12, a two-day conference for mariachi practitioners will be held at University of San Diego and offer mariachi music instruction and training for 300 students from across the country.
